Easter Films with DHSB

Easter Animation Workshop with Devonport High School for Boys
22 April, 2025
Fotonow was filled with creative energy over Easter as we welcomed young people from Devonport High School for Boys for a day of stop motion animation as part of their half term activities.
Led by our Community Filmmaker Jess Scott, the session kicked off with an introduction to animation history and the principles behind how moving images work. Jess demonstrated the basics, giving everyone a chance to get hands-on with the equipment before diving into their own creations.
Working in small groups, the young filmmakers quickly moved from planning to production, crafting characters using a colourful array of materials including plasticine, pipe cleaners, and the all-important googly eyes. The studio transformed into a hub of imaginative storytelling and participants brought their visions to life frame by frame.
By the end of the day, five unique animated short films had been created, each showcasing the group’s creativity and newfound animation skills. We finished with a mini premiere, celebrating everyone’s hard work and achievements.
“We’re going to continue as an animating duo,” said one enthusiastic young person about their future plans, another confidently declared their group would be “the next big thing” in animation – we wouldn’t be surprised!
We loved providing a fun holiday activity and giving young people an experience of creating stop motion techniques that they can continue to explore in future! Check out one of the films below, Aliens Love Apples by aspiring filmmakers George and Henry! Several animations from the day are featured below.

A big thank you to DHSB for partnering with us on this workshop and to DHSB’s Mr Campbell for stewarding the group with us. We’re always excited to see young people engaging with creative media and discovering new ways to tell stories.
We look forward to welcoming DHSB back for more creative adventures soon!
