FoodSEqual Animation Workshop at Fresh Street celebration event

17 January 2025

Just before Christmas we ran a stop motion animation workshop at FoodSEqual’s Fresh Street end of year celebration event. Fresh Street provided fresh seasonal fruit and vegetables to people in Whitleigh between December 2023 and October 2024. Taking inspiration from Food SEqual’s community food researchers we created a collaborative stop motion film using soil, vegetables, and magnetic letters.

Participants were asked to think about how they feel about veg and use that as inspiration for their section of the film. Often coming up with words and phrases that were then animated frame by frame. As one person left, another would come along and continue the film.

Over the three hour event we created a one minute short that was then premiered to the room. One child joined in and ended up staying for an hour, he said he felt “really proud of himself”. He then ended up helping other participants realise their ideas. The animation station became a hub of people watching, doing, and collaborating with each other. Even the adults came to have a play.

Using an iPad connected to a TV on the wall, participants could see what was being done and were encouraged to come over and join in. One gentleman came over three times to observe, before contributing a scene where a potato emerges from the soil with a sigh of relief.

We want to thank Dr Clare Pettinger for inviting us to take part in this great event.
