GET STARTED WITH PHOTOGRAPHY: YOUNG PEOPLE DEVELOP SKILLS WITH FOTONOW & THE KING’S TRUST

28 March, 2025

Last week Fotonow welcomed 11 fantastic young people for a five-day ‘Get Started with Photography’ programme with The King’s Trust. The week saw participants learning how to shoot a variety photography styles and techniques using our digital cameras and how to post-process and edit their images in our iMac suite and Adobe Creative Cloud software.

Monday started at Royal William Yard where the group got to grips with the cameras before exploring the historic area. On Tuesday we visited to Everyman Cinema Plymouth, where our friends at the venue opened their doors for lifestyle, product and interior photography sessions in the stylish retro-inspired space.

Portraiture was the focus on Wednesday, with participants learning how to direct subjects and work with both natural and artificial lighting to achieve some really cool looks. Thursday’s landscape theme took us to Mount Edgecumbe country park, where the group captured the natural scenery and photogenic locations, getting creative with how they captured the house and grounds.

Friday featured an inspiring talk from local professional photographer Josh Greet, who shared his journey from creating music flyers in his school years through to shooting elite athletes for global brands like Adidas. His personal projects celebrating Devon and its people also resonated, showing how commercial work can co-exist with passion projects.

This has fully inspired me to pursue photography as an occupation, instead of just a hobby. Cas, Get Started Participant.

The week ended with a showcase at Real Ideas café in Royal William Yard, where everyone displayed their work on the big screen and digital zine, and demonstrated their skills with an pop-up portrait shoot for visitors. Family, friends, King’s Trust staff and council officials came to support them and celebrate their progress.

Each participant took home their first portfolio, showcasing technical skills and personal style. Several also connected to local volunteering opportunities at the event to keep developing their practice.

The young people have definitely grown in confidence as a result of the activities this week. The environment has been very relaxed, welcoming and creative! Hannah Ainsworth, The King’s Trust.

Thanks to The King’s Trust for their ongoing partnership with Fotonow! We’re also grateful to Josh Greet for sharing his journey and insights with our participants. Thanks to Maja at Everyman Cinema team for the use of their stylish space, Tweeny at The Pottery for lending ceramics for our shoot, and Rob, Fran and the team at Real Art Make Print for hosting our celebration.

Most importantly, huge congratulations to all the young people on the programme – we had a great time working with you and can’t wait to see what you do next!
