Photography Sessions with Hasler Company

17 February, 2025

Over the past five weeks, Fotonow has been working with Hasler Naval Service Recovery Centre to introduce ill and injured service personnel to photography. Based at HMS Drake in Plymouth, Hasler Company cares for the most seriously injured naval service personnel and those with complex cases or long-term illnesses.

The group we worked with brought great energy to each session, engaging with photography as a creative outlet. We split our time between Fotonow HQ and the grounds of Pentillie Castle, where participants explored different photographic prompts and tecniques each week.

By the end of the course, everyone had grown more confident with the cameras, experimenting with settings and finding ways to bring photography into their everyday lives. The final two sessions at Pentillie saw the group capturing the landscape on photowalks before putting together an exhibition of their work at Pentillie’s ‘Bathing Hut’ situated on the banks of the Tamar.

At the final showcase, participants shared their work with family, friends, and the wider Hasler staff team. “It’s great to have everyone’s photos printed,” said Sharky. “I’m grateful to have these as a memory to take home and to look back on.”

“It’s been an opportunity to try something completely new,” said Su. “It’s changed the way I look at my surroundings.” Elise added, “The whole process has been very therapeutic.”

The Fotonow team extend a big thank you and well done to all the participants, who got stuck and we hope took a lot from the sessions! Thanks also to our ace Fotonow volunteer Greg for his support across the programme.

A big thank you to Paul Weir and the Hasler team for partnering with us and facilitating the sessions at Pentillie Castle, it has been fantastic to support the important work that Hasler does.
