Work Experience 2024

Fotonow Work Experience Week 2024
19th August, 2024
Earlier this summer we ran our annual Work Experience Week, welcoming nine young people from secondary schools and further education settings across Plymouth for 5 days full of creative projects!
We don’t delegate the tea-making and camera-cleaning to our work experience students, instead we get them working together as a creative team on real-world pieces. This year, the group produced promotional films and photography for some of the studio holders here at Ocean Studios, where Fotonow is based.

Emily Evans, MINSKI.
With the support of Jess Scott and Emily Fletcher from the Fotonow team and our volunteers Sam Smith and Will Thomas, the young people took on the challenge of working directly with studio holders and interacting with them as if they were commercial clients. It was a real, hands-on experience that saw them stepping into the roles of photographers and filmmakers. Using our commercial kit, the team captured the essence of the artists and businesses they were working with, trying out different approaches to illustrate their stories and brands.
Alongside a growing confidence with the gear and techniques, it was great to witness the way they came together as a team! At the start of the week, having just met each other, there was a to-be-expected shyness within the group. By Friday, they’d become good friends, exchanging numbers and sharing a sense of accomplishment.

The studio holders were really pleased with the work that was produced, some of the portrait photographs and video interviews, in particular, really captured the spirit of their subjects! We want to say a big thank you to those who got involved – including Minski, Jimmy Swindells, Sally Holt, Zoe Clare and Real Art Make Print (Real Ideas).
This week was about learning new skills, connecting with each other and with the artistic community around us. We’re proud of what these young people achieved, and it was a privilege to see them grow over the course of just a few days!
